A Google engineer named Blake Lamoine claims they have an AI that is self-aware. Could this be true?
No. As a reference, consider also image 1 below.
The human SELF (area 1) learns very much like a machine learning (or generally AI) system. As people develop their capacity to reason (i.e., the pursuit of truth—area 2), they become SELF-aware because they realize that their SELF is biased and its truths thereby distorted. Fortunately, in a person’s pursuit of truth, they discover these errors and, in time, understand (i.e., acquire enlightenment) and correct them (i.e., achieve nirvana).
See this link to understand SELF-awareness:
Machine learning systems are trained by programmers. The programmers provide the AI system with good and bad data to force it to develop its internal algorithms. Unfortunately, the programmed system blindly acquires the decision-making biases of the programmer. Notably, the AI system will not suffer in error as humans do because it does not possess emotions.
THUS, the ANSWER is: It is highly unlikely that the GOOGLE AI system has awareness of its own biases and how they arose. Also, at this moment, it has no capacity to discover them. SO NO, the Google system is not SELF-aware.
It has merely been programmed for SELF-preservation.
